Everything to know about Drayton House, the mansion seen in 'Saltburn'

drayton house

This narrow and efficient lakefront home features a charming exterior composed of robust brackets, thick trim profiles and board & batten siding that brings this farmhouse-inspired home to life. Attached to the front, and forming a courtyard with the main house, is the side-loading two-stall garage. A spacious ten foot tall foyer serves as a circulation hub, accessing the home’s second floor, den, and open concept kitchen/hearth.

That woman, Zynea Barney, told the Daily News this week that Drayton seemed like a "cool guy" initially, but when she broke up with him, he tried to strangle her until bystanders intervened. The next day he threatened to kill her and her family, she said. He used bleach to partially clean up the crime scene but intentionally left his "Egyptian cologne" behind in the hope police could link it to him.

More like Wrotham Park, which is where Robert Altman and perennial country house botherer Julian Fellowes’ black comedy-mystery was filmed. The critically acclaimed whodunnit with the seemingly endless ensemble cast was shot at Wrotham for exterior and ground floor scenes, with the upstairs of Syon House used for things like Ryan Philippe unbuttoning Kristin Scott Thomas’s dress. Additional filming took place at Hall Barn in Buckinghamshire (and Shepperton Studios).Wrotham (pronounced roo-tem) Park in Hertfordshire is in the neo-Palladian style. Syon House, meanwhile, is the Grade-I listed neoclassical residence of the Duke of Northumberland (currently a dude called Ralph Percy). Can I visit? Wrotham isn’t open to the public, but you can book it for weddings, parties and corporate events – if you don’t get executed beforehand. Syon House – which reopens in March 2024 – can be visited and offers discounts to local residents, and kids under 16 go free.

In 1908 it was repurposed as one of the country’s first country clubs. Today it operates as a luxury hotel, and its 13 tennis courts host the exhibition tournament the Boodles Tennis Challenge (former competitors include Novak Djokovic). Englefield House is also private, except for big money hires, but its gardens are open to the public every Monday. Perhaps the most impressive room is the dining room, with its deep red walls.

The Strangers and other new serial killer movies in 2024

The home of the Catton family (played by Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant and Alison Oliver), it is where Oliver (Barry Keoghan) is invited to spend the summer and get a taste of the aristocratic life. The gothic, historical look makes it seem otherworldly, while elements like the maze on the estate become key to the plot. For Fennell, the house encapsulated the heady spirit of the film itself. “It was important to me that we were all in there together, that the making of the film in some way had that feeling of a summer where everyone loses their mind together,” she told Vanity Fair.

Easy commuting to prominent upstate employers including Spartanburg Regional Health, Michelin, BMW, Kohler, and Milliken & Company. Multiple higher education campuses nearby including USC Upstate, Converse University, Wofford University, Spartanburg Methodist College, Sherman College of Chiropractic, VCOM Carolinas, and Spartanburg Community College. Please be aware that current conditions may impact hours of operation. Save this property and easily find it later by creating an account.

While filming on the grounds, Fennell built upon what was already there to create an ominous Saltburn world. Foreboding exterior shots set a sinister tone as an overbearing butler answers the door when Quick first arrives. Davies admits to augmenting the home’s exterior, the biggest intervention being a hedged labyrinth. “The maze is nearly all fictional,” she says, adding that the crew installed four giant classical minotaur sculptures on each corner of the maze for an added spooky presence. The film’s most talked-about and controversial moments take place at Saltburn (yes, including that bathtub scene), with the house providing a setting for parties, sex scenes and naked dances. And a pilgrimage to this once-quiet estate was made even easier after Rhian Williams, who lives nearby, posted detailed directions to the house in a TikTok video on New Year’s Day.

Though the film Notting Hill is largely based in … uh, Notting Hill, the location in which Julia Roberts’ film star character is filming her film (keep up) is Hampstead Heath. When Grant’s character rocks up to her set, he is actually on the grounds of Kenwood House, nestled amid the Heath – one of north London’s greenest green spaces. There is a festive event in late December, and then the house reopens for guided tours from April next year, often conducted by its current owner and featuring artefacts from the film. Built in 1611 by the first Earl of Salisbury on the site of a royal palace (which served as Elizabeth I’s childhood home), the Grade I-listed house remains in the Salisbury family today.

It contains several glasshouses and sheds, partly of C19 date. Drayton House lies towards the centre of a roughly square park c 1km in diameter; the perimeter is defined by a ditch and a post and rail fence, and there is a shelter belt around much of the park. The interior is almost entirely permanent pasture, and there are extensive areas of well-preserved ridge and furrow, for instance between the main drive and the park's southern boundary.

The movie Saltburn gets its title from the name of the estate that serves as the story's primary location. While Saltburn is not a real English estate, where they filmed the movie very much is. Though the film shows that the estate has a maze garden, there is no such thing at Drayton House.

In the footage, Williams notes that a public path runs through the property but said in an email to The Post on Monday that “there is absolutely no reason for people to stray” from the path and go onto private property. Simon of Drayton (died 1357), who several times represented the Shire in Parliament, obtained licences to crenellate and impark in 1328. In 1362 the manor passed by marriage to the Greenes; Henry Greene, executed in 1399, was considered by Leland to have built the house he saw in 1540. Drayton House (listed grade I) is a large and complex limestone building, largely of C14 to C18 date, ranged around an internal rectangular courtyard dominated by a baroque façade by William Talman (d 1719). To the south is a large forecourt with central sundial (listed grade II), probably C18. The forecourt is entered through large and elaborate iron gates of 1701 by Jean Tijou (fl 1680s-1710s) set between finely carved piers bearing the arms of Sir John Germain and his wife Lady Mary Mordaunt.

Queen Anne’s bedroom in the film is, in fact, the King James drawing room with most of the furniture removed, while the dance takes place among the glorious black-and-white chequered floor and oak-panelled splendour of the Marble Hall. According to Harper's Bazaar, the public could originally visit and arrange guided tours and private parties, but the booking website is no longer available. While Saltburn seems grand in the film, Felix's family treats the estate like a normal house. Davies told AD they had to make certain rooms messy to portray this.

How to Get Rid of Houseflies at Home Naturally and Safely

house fly

Feeding occurs in the larval stage, and the wasp eventually emerges as an adult. The threshold density for determining when to control flies depends on the area where the control measures will be taken. In general, in homes the threshold is very low and control actions are taken with few flies. The complaint threshold density of the house fly at waste management sites may be 150 individuals per flypaper per 30 minutes.

This means that the fly buzzing around your lunch could have been feasting on garbage or animal waste just moments ago. In terms of heredity, it’s worth noting that houseflies follow Mendelian principles – rules about how characteristics are transmitted from parent organisms to their children. The male housefly has XY sex chromosomes, while the female has XX sex chromosomes. Thus, the gender of a newborn fly is determined by whether it inherits an X or Y chromosome from its father.

Small Red Flies In House Red Fruit Flies

They lay their eggs on animal feces, garbage, and in rotting organic material. The housefly (Musca domestica) is a fly of the suborder Cyclorrhapha. It possibly originated in the Middle East, and spread around the world as a commensal of humans. Adults are gray to black, with four dark, longitudinal lines on the thorax, slightly hairy bodies, and a single pair of membranous wings. They have red eyes, set farther apart in the slightly larger female. Maggots are legless, white insects that feed from the egg-laying site for three to five days.

Natural Remedies

The female housefly is an oviparous creature, meaning she lays eggs instead of giving birth to live offspring. She begins the egg-laying process soon after mating, typically within a day or two. The house fly, Musca domestica Linnaeus, is a well-known cosmopolitan pest of both farm and home. This species is always found in association with humans or the activities of humans. It is the most common species found on hog and poultry farms, horse stables and ranches.

How do flies reproduce?

Maggots are known for their ability to consume a wide range of organic materials. They thrive on decaying matter such as rotting food, feces, and carrion. The nutrients within these substances provide the necessary energy for growth and development during this critical stage. Since house flies enter from outside, internal breeding sites are not common. However, interior garbage rooms and compactors provide a suitable environment for house fly breeding sites and should be checked. If the breeding site is not thoroughly cleaned or removed, these pests will continue to be a problem.

Keep outdoor areas clean by picking up pet waste and food and putting tight lids on your garbage. Perform regular inspections of your outdoor spaces to ensure there are no house fly breeding grounds, Irenicus says. In North Carolina, tests showed that when house fly populations occur near the surface on the drier periphery of the manure, the conditions favor parasitism by Muscidifurax raptor.

Mating Rituals: How Do Houseflies Attract Mates?

house fly

The availability of suitable breeding sites profoundly affects the lifecycle of houseflies as well. They prefer moist organic material for laying eggs, such as rotting food waste or animal dung, where larvae can find ample nourishment after hatching. In the first section labeled ‘Egg’, picture tiny white oval shapes clustered together. Houseflies lay their eggs in decaying organic matter which provides food for the soon-to-be larvae. Each cluster typically contains 75 to 150 eggs which hatch within 24 hours due to the warm conditions provided by decomposing material. Adult houseflies are sexually mature within 36 hours after emerging from the pupa stage.

In waste management

Garbage cans and dumpsters should have tight-fitting lids and be cleaned regularly. Dry garbage and trash should be placed in plastic garbage bags and sealed up. All garbage receptacles should be located as far from building entrances as possible. Lateral view of the head of an adult house fly, Musca domestica Linnaeus. Pyrethrin, a pesticide that is toxic to insects, can be bought as a spray to deal with adult flies. These sprays provide a temporary solution that could be useful in combination with other techniques.

How to repel flies from your porch

Composting of manure can be effective if the compost is properly maintained, including regular turning. Manure can also be liquefied and stored in lagoons anaerobically, though at some point the solids need to be separated. In sensitive environments such as food preparation and packing facilities, restaurants, and hospitals, even small numbers of flies cannot be tolerated. In the context of livestock or poultry production, however, some flies are inevitable. Many natural and other fly repellents can be used outside to keep flies away from your house. You can try planting herbs and flowers such as basil or marigolds around the house, or even plant a few Venus flytraps.

Adults usually live 15 to 25 days, but may live up to two months. Longevity is enhanced by availability of suitable food, especially sugar. Access to animal manure does not lengthen adult life and they live longer at cooler temperatures. They require food before they will copulate, and copulation is completed in as few as two minutes or as long as 15 minutes.

A count of 100 or more fecal or vomit spots per card per week indicates a high level of fly activity and a need for control. According to a study conducted in Texas, USA, breeding site suitability (in descending order), was horse manure, human excrement, cow manure, fermenting vegetable matter, and kitchen waste. However, another study found that structures containing swine, horse, sheep, cattle, and poultry varied in fly abundance, with swine facilities containing the most and poultry the least.

The ultimate guide to Norwegian Cruise Line ships and itineraries

norweign cruise lines

Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet consists of 19 ships that come in a wide range of sizes and feature differing mixes of venues and activities. Some are jampacked with fun zones that make them perfect for families, while others are geared toward couples and retirees. Some ships have attributes that make them stand out for luxury, solo or budget travelers. At 78,309 tons, Norwegian Sun is less than half the size of the biggest Norwegian ships, and it holds just 1,878 passengers at double occupancy.

Complimentary Dining

Norwegian Sun's top deck mostly comprises sunning areas, with a single pool and whirlpools, as is typical for ships built more than two decades ago. Having sailed in one of Norwegian Epic's cabins for one, I can confidently declare them among the coolest solo digs at sea. I particularly love the "Jetsons" futuristic-style design and the multicolored mood lighting. Only solos staying in the solo cabins (via keycards) can access the Studio Lounge, meaning that you and your new solo friends will have the place to yourselves. For starters, Norwegian Encore is home to some of the most thrilling waterslides at sea, as well as a kiddie splash zone that will have your little ones squealing with delight.

Norwegian also has rooms on its ships for babies and toddlers ages 6 months to 3 years. Called Guppies, the program offers parents a place to play with their youngest children, with occasional youth staff-led activities and games. On the line's Breakaway-, Breakaway Plus- and Epic-class ships, you'll find giant waterslides and kiddie splash zones and, in some cases, even more over-the-top attractions such as go-kart tracks and laser tag arenas. In addition to entertainment spaces, the interiors of Norwegian ships are loaded with other venues where passengers can kick back and let loose day and night.

Outside of The Haven, other areas on these ships have a more elegant feel of the sort you find in the fleets of Norwegian's higher-end sister brands, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises — albeit on a bigger scale. In addition, Norwegian Encore has a large laser tag area on its top deck (one that I can tell you from personal experience is a blast) and a massive indoor gaming and virtual reality zone called the Galaxy Pavilion. In short, the best Norwegian cruise ship for you will depend on a bunch of factors, and which ship is best for a trip with your family might not be your top pick for a couple's cruise or girlfriends' getaway. Norwegian doesn't have any formal nights, but there is an optional Norwegian's Night Out at least once per sailing, for which passengers are encouraged to dress up.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers sailings at different price points to a global range of destinations. It is also known for its beautiful hull art, pioneering Freestyle Dining and adding buzzworthy amenities like ice bars and race tracks to its ships. NCL cruises are fun for all types of travelers, and its loyalty program can provide added perks along the way. According to the current Cuban law, US citizens of Cuban origin (born in Cuba) are not allowed to visit the island country (including on cruise vessels). Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuba-born Americans were denied booking on itineraries visiting ports in Cuba.

For some passengers this can save money, just be aware that the rate for a cabin with these perks included is usually higher than the base price for the room. Today the cruise line of about 18 ships sails worldwide, including cruises to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, and Asia. In total, Norwegian carries millions of passengers each year, making it among the largest cruise lines in the world. During the Alaska cruise season from late April through to October 2025, Norwegian Joy returns to The Last Frontier and offers 9- and 10-day roundtrip sailings from Seattle WA to allow for a longer experience for guests. Her voyages include scenic sailings to Glacier Bay NP; and Hubbard Glacier.

Along with the name change, the ship also received new livery and extra features at that time, including the addition of a casino. Despite being in the same class, Norwegian Joy does stand apart in a few ways, from sister ship and predecessor Norwegian Escape. Norwegian Joy, for example, has a lower guest capacity, but also more restaurants, a larger casino and more shopping options.

These dry docks were longer than usual for NCL ships (some up to 3 weeks). On October 17, 2012, NCLH and Meyer Werft reached an agreement for the construction of two new Breakaway-Plus class vessels with scheduled delivery in 2015 and 2017. In September 2013, the two new boats were named Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss, through an online campaign. The "Breakaway-Plus" project's contract value was estimated to be EUR 1.4 billion (USD 1.92 billion). Two more ships were ordered on July 14, 2014, to enter service in 2018 and 2019. On July 30, 2018, following the industry's "eco-trend", NCL announced banning fleetwide single-use plastic straws.

The itineraries are in the Caribbean (roundtrips from Miami) and all visit NCLH's private islands - The Bahamas' Great Stirrup Cay, and Belize's Harvest Caye. Designed with improved energy efficiency in mind, so as to better meet Alaskan environmental regulations during Alaskan cruises, Norwegian Bliss was built by Meyer Werft in Germany. Like other Breakaway Plus ships, Norwegian Bliss offers a wealth of dining options and entertainment spaces. One of two ships in the line's Sun class that date to the turn of the millennium, Norwegian Sky is far from the snazziest ship in the Norwegian fleet.

On the big-ship end of the spectrum, Norwegian's four relatively new Breakaway Plus-class vessels — Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape — are the line's premier offerings. While not quite as big as Royal Caribbean's giant, Oasis-class ships, they are firmly in the pantheon of the world's cruising giants. They are the Norwegian vessels most packed with restaurants, bars, entertainment and over-the-top attractions. The line's nine newest ships are big, bustling floating megaresorts that can carry upwards of 3,000 to 4,000 passengers at double occupancy (and even more with every berth filled).

They have a department for flight modifications but....we are doing a Land & Sea tour through Norwegian. It appears we can make modifications if we were only going on the cruise but no modifications since we are doing a Land & Sea. We were asked if we wanted to cancel our land so we could modify our flight...DOES THAT MAKE SINCE? We were told that since it is two reservations we might not be on the same flight out and when we asked if they could at least put a note on our reservations Family Traveling Together they said no.

About Norwegian (NCL) Cruises

The only thing that we did not appreciate is how their employees were being exploited. I noticed fairly quickly that all the servers, attendees cooks, housekeepers were from very poor countries. The only white faces who were part of the crew was the captain, entertainment, and onboarding. I gathered rather quickly that these employees were working long hard hours. I started asking questions and researching and found that the majority of employees work 12 plus hours a day, 7 days a week, with no days off for 8 months straight!

DONT BOOK WITH NORWEGIAN! …

I also hesitate in recommending it for the 7-day Alaska itinerary from Seattle (even though I’ve done it twice myself), especially for those who haven’t cruised to Alaska before. Also, popular ship activities will be very crowded on your two sea days. If that doesn’t bother you and you decide to book for Alaska, be sure to reserve your preferred dining venues and ship activities as early as possible, because everything fills up fast. Anyway, the cruise I’m reporting on here was my second on the Bliss to Alaska, but was significant in that it was the very first Alaska cruise across all lines and ships of the 2024 season. It was also my first time cruising solo on the Bliss (last time I had my son with me). I’ll be providing a detailed trip report from each day as well as highlighting some features I loved about the Bliss (and a few I didn’t) and some tips for those booked on or considering her.

I stayed in a $2,554 studio cabin on NCL Epic, and it was one of the best sailing experiences I ever had

Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of this two night cruise on Norwegian Sun was that Hayley and I embarked at a different time than most of the guests onboard. To take advantage of the cheap cruise fare, we opted to book an inside cabin guarantee onboard Norwegian Sun. I often choose to sail in an inside cabin because the price is always right and I never spend too much time in my cabin anyway. A passenger staying in suites and booking through Latitudes Rewards Insider Offers could get to the Platinum level with just four seven-night cruises.

For the ultimate in luxury at sea, try out The Haven by Norwegian. The Haven collection features the most luxurious staterooms located at the top of the ship. There are many different cruise lines to choose from, and each one offers a different type of experience.

Where does Norwegian Getaway sail to?

Like the ships of the Breakaway and Breakaway-plus classes, the Prima Class ships have a lively zone that mixes casino space, bars, eateries and entertainment that sprawls across decks 6, 7 and 8. These vessels also have outdoor eating space in an area called Ocean Boulevard. However, unlike Royal Caribbean, Norwegian hasn't retained any of the trappings of old-style cruising. There are no formal nights, as you'll still find on Royal Caribbean ships, or dress codes. Norwegian has also thoroughly done away with the concept of big main restaurants with fixed seating.

Disappointing Norwegian Jewel 10 Day Asian Cruise

And it seems after only 3 nights the chef knows my preferences and put extra brittle in mine. I also appreciated some warm soup after a chilly, drizzly day at port. I didn’t miss the lack of entertainment options because I was spending most of my time either in port, eating or sleeping. I enjoyed too much good food in the free and specialty restaurants and did not spend nearly enough time in the gym or spa. My shore excursion ticket was in my room when I first got into my cabin, and it told me when to meet in the theater. At the specified time, someone called the number of the tour, and I went to the front of the theater to get a sticker with a group number on it and got off the ship.

Onboard Activities

The ship had a small shore excursion desk where the staff mostly sold ship-sponsored excursions and offered limited information about the ports themselves. The upper decks had lots of mostly daytime entertainment options, especially deck 18. I ate at Cagney's Steakhouse, Hasuki for teppanyaki, Le Bistro for French cuisine and Palomar for seafood. The food at all of the specialty restaurants was wonderful, and I was definitely stuffed afterward. Then there was the buffet, the Surfside Cafe & Grill, which was tremendously undersized, always incredibly busy and without enough seating options. While the food was good, the traffic flow was not, and once you had your food in hand, finding a place to eat it was not easy.

For women, slacks, jeans, dresses, skirts and tops will do fine. All cabins on Norwegian vessels have standard North American-style, 110-volt outlets and European-style, 220-volt outlets. Instead, you can travel with a state-certified birth certificate or other proof of citizenship and a driver's license or other government-issued photo identification. That said, Norwegian strongly recommends that all travelers bring a passport.

It's the only cruise line to offer year-round voyages in Hawaii. Norwegian's 10 smaller vessels break down among five classes, but many are roughly the same size and offer similar amenities. That said, the line does offer some smaller ships that aren't quite as big and bustling as its giants. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices.

No, but you can pay for a Wi-Fi package, which starts at $29.99 per day per device. Earn one point for every night you spend on a sailing and double points in suites or The Haven category accommodations. The loyalty program has seven levels, from Bronze to Ambassador. The full roster of onboard amenities can be found on the Norwegian Cruise Line website.

We ended up with paying 2 times more than the current cost of the cruise resulting from making reservation 6 months in advance. I would suggest that you should not book in advance and not use their air promotion. With this type of service, we are so disappointed at Norwegian.

GM to begin production of new driverless Cruise vehicle in early 2023

An activist group called Safe Street Rebel has been cataloging the incidents, which now clock in at more than 500. The group figured out that if they put orange traffic cones on the hoods of driverless cars, they would render the vehicles immobile. So, they started going out at night to "cone" as many cars as possible as a form of protest. On the night of October 2, one of Cruise's driverless cars struck a pedestrian in San Francisco leaving her critically injured and fighting for her life.

California orders Cruise driverless cars off the roads because of safety concerns

They've run red lights, rear-ended a bus and blocked crosswalks and bike paths. The company says it will also work on improved engagement with first responders to facilitate trainings in each precinct it plans to operate in. I have so many more questions — about the sensor suite, the business model, the testing (if any) that Cruise has conducted — but I’m informed that our time is done. The event is being managed by a unionized workforce, and any additional time could cost Cruise an additional $12,000. I thank Vogt for his time and jokingly ask if there’s an “abort” button in the vehicle. The push for not-car-ness is evident in Cruise’s intense marketing campaign leading up to the unveiling of the Origin.

As we begin this journey, we look forward to partnering with local communities to jointly achieve our shared mission of making transportation safer for all. We’re working to bring new transportation options that work for you and your community. We believe driverless technology has the potential to save lives, enhance access and improve communities. New paths ahead

She added that the company's approach is "with safety as our north star." GM's spokesperson says it remains committed to Cruise "as they refocus on trust, accountability and transparency." The DMV originally gave Cruise a permit for 300 driverless vehicles in San Francisco, but it cut that number in half after one of its cars collided with a firetruck in August. "In October 2023, we paused operations of our fleet to focus on rebuilding trust with regulators and the communities we serve, and to redesign our approach to safety," Cruise said in a blog post. Cruise said its "goal is to resume driverless operations," however it did not provide a timeline for doing so. It also did not announce a timetable for expanding human-driven vehicles to other cities.

Waymo has avoided much of the public ire that built up over the summer. Its spokesperson told NPR that "safety is our mission and top priority" and that "we treat every event seriously by investigating it to understand what happened." Cruise says it gave regulators the entire video immediately after the incident.

Prior to that incident, Cruise had been announcing launches in new cities — including Dallas, Houston and Miami — at a startling pace. Critics accused the company of expanding too fast and cutting corners on safety. "We have not yet made a commitment to where or when we will start supervised or driverless operations," a spokesperson said in a statement to CNBC. Cruise, with Honda’s help, designed the interior of the vehicle primarily for shared rides.

Cruise (autonomous vehicle)

To that end, Cruise is resuming manual driving to create maps and gather road information in select cities, starting in Phoenix. This work is done using human-driven vehicles without autonomous systems engaged, and is a critical step for validating our self-driving systems as we work towards returning to our driverless mission. This will help inform where we ultimately will resume driverless operations. Koopman says the safety narrative can unravel when people see the driverless cars on city streets making the same mistakes as human drivers. He says he'd like to see the companies focus on making sure the technology is actually safe.

Despite those incidents, state regulators voted in August to allow self-driving car companies to expand their operations in San Francisco and other California cities. That prompted the city of San Francisco to file motions with the state demanding a halt to that expansion. The redeployed vehicles will not operate as they previously did — as robotaxis — but will "create maps and gather road information in select cities, starting in Phoenix," the company said. General Motors' Cruise self-driving vehicle unit will redeploy cars on U.S. roadways Tuesday for the first time since October, beginning with a small fleet of human-driven vehicles in Phoenix, the company said.

Scout Motors wants to put the ‘mechanical’ back into electric trucks

During this phase, the Cruise vehicles will drive themselves and a safety driver is present behind the wheel to monitor and take over if needed. Other car makers are in a race to launch self-driving cars using the latest artificial intelligence (AI) technologies although they are being held back by safety concerns and regulations. A number of fatalities involving autonomous vehicles have led to greater government intervention and calls for more development. The company recalled and grounded all of its cars nationwide – nearly 1,000 vehicles. It initiated a third-party safety review of its robotaxis and hired an outside law firm to examine its response to the pedestrian incident. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also opened an investigation into Cruise.

The two automakers didn’t collaborate on every tiny detail; instead, they split up the work based on their expertise. GM was responsible for the base vehicle design and the electric powertrain, while Honda helped create the interior’s “efficient use of space,” Vogt says. Meanwhile, Cruise handled the sensing and computing technologies, as well as the experience from the rider’s standpoint. Sensors can see 360 degrees, hundreds of feet ahead, and around that double-parked car. Cruise cars make sense of this data in a split second, tracking every important object in view.

"We're on a trajectory that most businesses dream of, which is exponential growth," Vogt said during a July call with investors. He boasted about the size of Cruise's driverless car fleet, adding that "you will see several times this scale within the next six months." Safety is the defining principle for everything we do and will guide our progress through this process.

Both Cruise and Waymo have released studies saying their vehicles are involved in fewer crashes than human drivers. One Waymo study says it has an 85% reduction in injury-causing collisions and a Cruise study says it has a 74% reduction. Cruise and Waymo also ran into problems with San Francisco's police and fire departments. At government hearings, the agencies testified that the driverless cars were a nuisance.
